After skiing for the last twenty years or so, Team Smart decided to clear off and enjoy the Florida sunshine. |
This year the ‘Smarties on Tour’ destination was sunny Florida, and yes it really is the ‘sunshine state’.
Kev and Joey were press-ganged by the kids into everything Mr Disney could throw at them, whilst my eldest daughter, Harrie, and I preferred to chill out by the pool all day, reading.
It was not by chance we timed our trip to the land of monster roller coasters and beef steaks to coincide with Daytona Bike Week.
Motorcycle rental in the USA is a fairly simple affair, all the main dealerships all hire bikes out and can be booked online prior to your visit, just like car hire. We hired our machines whilst out there and still managed to get brand new Harley Davidson Heritage Soft Tails, at a very resonable price.
Now I know most of you will be grumbling about how you don’t like Harleys n’all, but believe me on American roads, in glorious sunshine, with thousands of other like minded riders, they’re the only bike to ride to really soak up the atmosphere. Simply brilliant!
After spending many motorcycling holidays seeking twisty, winding valleys and mountain passes it made a refreshing change to ride very different bikes in a country and state that embraces motorcycling.
In Daytona, bikes, and in particular Harleys are a way of life, not just a mode of transport. Would we buy one? Not in the UK because the roads we know and love here are best suited to different machinery (I can hear all you GS fans cheering!) But next year, Palm Beach, Miami, guess what I’ll be on? A Hog!
